Five minutes till the bus arrived. John slouched forwarded and took his engineering hat off. Chip his son, looked eagerly over Johns shoulder down the road bobbing up and down shifting his head side-to-side trying to glimpse his oncoming future. He was a pre med student awaiting his bus to take him off to collage, chip was the second born out of 8, six girls and his brother hennery in the war. Recently the general came up to there door with the American flag in hand, Henry was MIA. This rang upsetting to the whole family, especially John; with hopes of his son coming back to take over the family engineering business. Chip being the next of kin, was up to inherent the business, but as they sat he was being sent off to collage. His stare lay blank as John slouched on the side of the old family car. Then he recalled an event most upsetting to him. An argument he have had in the early months with his wife Bev. They were in the kitchen arguing over the recent death of their son.
"What do you mean Chip going off to study? He has to stay here to take over the business." He had said.
"He's not you John; He is a bright lad, if he stays here he'd be just squandering that."
"He is supposed to take of the family business, its been in my family for years that's how its works.
"John, he can't stay here, if he doesn't go off he will be enlisted into the service, "
"Well that is at least a more of an honorable thing to be instead of reading books and wasting time."
"John." Dev's eyes begin to swell up. "I will not loose my other son. I can't go through that. It's bad enough that Henry is no longer with us. I am not letting my son go out there and setting a gravestone on his head. You know that Henry was going to take over the shop; you can't just fill that hole back up with a nail that doesn't fit. He's smart; he didn't drop out of high school like you to go work in the mines. He's an intelligent boy, and ill be damned if you take that away from him"
A single tear dripped down her face, and tricked down on to her blouse. John grabbed his hat and stormed out the door.
The bus was finally arriving. It pulled up and came to a stop right in front of the tow men. John's sons face lit up as the doors of the bus opened as if it was a gateway into heaven. Chip hoped onto the first step of the bus and grabbed the railing and turned around. John stammered to his feet grabbing his hat to dust off his oily jump suit.
"Well father this is it. Are you going to miss me?" Chip looked down at his father.
John stared back at him his hat in both hands, he grasped it tight; with a face as sad as a father could be.
"You shouldn't be leaving" He averted his gave from his son and stared at the
Ground.
"What?" Chips mouth was agape.
"You shouldn't be abandoning this family." He said as he looked back up, with fists clenched. Chip was flabbergasted a feeling of displacement set in.
"Wha… what are you… what do you mean?"
There was no response form John. He put his hat on top of his head and looked back at his son one last time. His eyes began to water as he saw sin distraught and concerned. John looked back down and began to slowly walk away. Chip still standing in the door was in a daze, Every thing he lived for and stood up for was shoot down in a few words right on his futures foot steps. The bus driver began to hurry chip on bored. He stepped on, with the world he left behind in twain.
